Britain’s coldest May in more than 300 years will deliver 50mph gales, 5cm (2in) of rain and flooding.
Central England temperatures so far this month average 8.6C, 1.6C below normal.
The last time May was colder was in 1698, at 8.5C over the whole month.
After studying 2,800-year-old core samples from a European lake, an international team of scientists found that weakening solar activity sparked an abrupt period of cooling that lasted for about 200 years. The cooling took place over an 8 year period. We may be on the cusp of 200 more years of cooling. Cooling which is going to take place rapidly. Stay tuned!

The prospect of an epic train journey from New York to London might seem like a distant dream for those seeking the ultimate railway holiday.
But booking a ticket from Grand Central to St Pancras Station could be a step closer after Russia gave the green light for plans for a 65-mile tunnel under the Bering Strait.
The Kremlin this week gave its support for a $99billion scheme that would link Asia and North America and allow for a potential once-in-a-lifetime train journey.

The proposed tunnel would pass underneath the Big Diomede and Little Diomede islands and straddle the international dateline to link East and West.
Engineers have said there is no technical reason the tunnel could not be completed and it could provide a cheaper way of shipping freight around the world, The Times reported.
The idea was first raised by Tsar Nicholas II in 1905, but was this week endorsed by Aleksandr Levinthal - deputy federal representative for the Russian Far East - at a conference on developing infrastructure in the country's remote north-east.

SO HOW LONG COULD THE EPIC JOURNEY TAKE?

An East to West train route would require both Russia and the U.S. to construct railway lines in Siberia and Alaska.
Currently, train services extend as far east as Chita or Vladivostock in Russia, while you would need to take a ferry between Bellingham and Anchorage to get anywhere near the Bering Strait on the U.S. side.
At present it would take just over two weeks to get as far along the route as physically possible. Here's how:
London - Brussels - Cologne - Moscow: 18hrs 30mins
Moscow - Chita: 106 hours
Train route from Chita to Anchorage
Bellingham - Anchorage: 7 days - by ferry
Seattle - Bellingham: 2 hours
New York - Philadelphia - Pittsburgh - Chicago - Seattle: 64hrs 30mins
Total journey time: 14 days 23 hours
The three-day conference, held in the eastern city of Yakutsk, brought delegates from the U.S., China and Britain and was aimed at capturing the economic potential of the resource-rich region.
Mr Levinthal told The Times: 'We should see advanced development of road and rail infrastructure here [in the Russian Far East] and improvement in the investment climate in Russia as a key aim.'
A 500-mile railway line stemming from the existing Trans-Siberian line to Yakutsk - costing £900million and due for completion in 2013 - is part of Kremlin plans to extend rail lines 2,360 miles to the north-eastern tip of Siberia by 2030.
That could open up the way for the construction of a tunnel - which could take up to another 15 years to complete.
The route would be twice the length of the Channel Tunnel, in a sparsely populated area miles from large population centres.
It would also require U.S. engineers to create through train lines in Alaska, linking it with cities in Canada and onwards.
Currently, travellers would have to get a ferry to Anchorage, Alaska, from the U.S. west coast and train services in Russia would only take you as far as Chita or Vladivostock, before they move down into China and Mongolia.
It remains to be seen whether Russia could finance such an ambitious project, but it opens up the possibility of a breathtaking train journey through picturesque Siberia and Alaska.

The seizure followed a request by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, which is seeking the extradition from Libya of Qaddafi’s son Seif al-Islam on charges of crimes against humanity. The police "seized today fixed and moveable assets, company stock and bank accounts connected to the family of ex-Libyan leader (Muammar) Qaddafi and to his entourage," a police statement said, which also listed the value of the assets seized.Shares in top Italian firms, including the nation’s largest banking group UniCredit, oil major ENI and carmaker Fiat were among the sequestered assets. Police said they further confiscated stock in the football club Juventus, a building in Rome, 150 acres of forest on the island of Pantelleria and two cars. A rogatory commission at the ICC requested the assets be seized in the context of its investigation into Qaddafi’s son and his former intelligence chief Abdullah Senussi, also a brother-in-law to the fallen Libyan strongman.

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican has for the first time appeared on the State Department's list of money-laundering centers but the tiny city-state is not rated as a high-risk country. The 2012 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report was made public on Wednesday and Washington's list of 190 countries classifies them in three categories: of primary concern, of concern and monitored.The Vatican is in the second category, grouped with 67 other nations including Poland, Egypt, Ireland, Hungary and Chile. It was added to the list because it was considered vulnerable to money-laundering and had recently established programs to prevent it, a State Department official said. "To be considered a jurisdiction of concern merely indicates that there is a vulnerability to a financial system by money launderers. With the large volumes of international currency that goes through the Holy See, it is a system that makes it vulnerable as a potential money-laundering center," Susan Pittman of the State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, told Reuters. Last year, the Vatican adapted internal laws to comply with international standards on financial crime. The Vatican is seeking inclusion on the European Commission's so-called "white list" of states who comply with international standards against tax fraud and money-laundering. A decision on its inclusion is expected in June. "Our aim is to make the 'white list' and we are happy that we have been put in the State Department's less vulnerable category," a Vatican official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The category of most vulnerable centers includes all members of the Group of Eight countries, including the United States, Germany, Italy and Russia, because the size of their economies and banking systems can facilitate money-laundering. It also includes small centers such as Britain's Channel Islands. The State Department's methodology is different from that of the Financial Action Task Force's International Cooperation Review Group (ICRG), which concentrates on a nation's compliance with international law and money-laundering regulations.VATICAN BANK HAS SCANDALOUS PAST The Vatican Bank, founded in 1942 by Pope Pius XII, has been in the spotlight since September 2010 when Italian investigators froze 23 million euros ($33 million) in funds in Italian banks after opening an investigation into possible money-laundering. The bank said it did nothing wrong and was just transferring funds between its own accounts. The money was released in June 2011 but the investigation is continuing. The Vatican's new financial transparency laws set up internal regulations to make sure its bank and all other departments adhere to international regulations and standards, and cooperate with foreign authorities. Two months ago, Italian newspapers published leaked internal letters which appeared to show a conflict among top Vatican officials about just how transparent the bank should be about dealings that took place before it enacted its new laws. The Vatican Bank was formally known as the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR) and was entangled in the collapse 30 years ago of Banco Ambrosiano, with its lurid allegations about money-laundering, freemasons, mafiosi and the mysterious death of Ambrosiano chairman Roberto Calvi - "God's banker". LANL Announces Plans for Workforce Reduction Lab seeking up to 800 in voluntary programLOS ALAMOS, NEW MEXICO, February 21, 2012—Los Alamos National Laboratory Director Charlie McMillan today said the Lab has submitted a plan to the National Nuclear Security Administration proposing to reduce its workforce by between 400 and 800 employees this spring through a voluntary separation program."We are taking these actions now in an attempt to reduce the risks of involuntary layoffs," McMillan said. "When combined with a suppressed attrition rate for the past three years, our current budget and future outlook require significant cost-cutting. The plan we’re submitting will position the Lab to continue executing our missions today and in the future."The plan must receive NNSA approval.In a meeting with employees today, McMillan said a combination of factors has led to this proposed action:The Lab’s Fiscal Year 2012 budget is more than $300 million lower than 2011-- $2.2 billion versus $2.55 billion.Future budgets are expected to be flat or lower.For a variety of reasons, attrition has decreased in the past few years."With a smaller workforce possessing the essential skills, we will be better positioned to deliver on current and future national security commitments. Allowing employees to apply for voluntary separation is a prudent step," McMillan said.Other important details:Certain job functions are not included in the voluntary separation program. New species of flax found in SE NM

SANTA FE (AP) - A new species of flax has been discovered by botanists with the New Mexico State Forestry Division and the federal Bureau of Land Management.
The new species was found in the gypsum soils of the Yeso Hills near the New Mexico-Texas border south of Carlsbad.
The species is named Allred's Flax, after recently retired botanist Kelly Allred from the New Mexico State University Animal and Range Science Department.
One of the discoverers, State Forestry Botanist Bob Sivinski, says the new species is just the most recent example of how much there is to learn about native plants in New Mexico.
Distinguished by its orange flowers with yellow centers, Allred's Flax grows abundantly as a short bush on gypsum-rich soils in the northern Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico and adjacent Texas.

Soil Microbes Accelerate Global Warming

(July 13, 2011) — More carbon dioxide in the atmosphere causes soil to release the potent greenhouse gases methane and nitrous oxide, new research published in this week's edition of Nature reveals. "This feedback to our changing atmosphere means that nature is not as efficient in slowing global warming as we previously thought," said Dr Kees Jan van Groenigen, Research Fellow at the Botany department at the School of Natural Sciences, Trinity College Dublin, and lead author of the study.

Van Groenigen, along with colleagues from Northern Arizona University and the University of Florida, gathered all published research to date from 49 different experiments mostly from North America, Europe and Asia, and conducted in forests, grasslands, wetlands, and agricultural fields, including rice paddies. The common theme in the experiments was that they all measured how extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere affects how soils take up or release the gases methane and nitrous oxide.
The research team used a statistical technique called meta-analysis, or quantitative data synthesis, a powerful tool for finding general patterns in a sea of conflicting results. "Until now, there was no consensus on this topic, because results varied from one study to the next," explained Professor Craig Osenberg of the University of Florida and co-author of the study. "However, two strong patterns emerged when we analysed all the data: firstly more CO2 boosted soil emissions of nitrous oxide in all the ecosystems, and secondly, in rice paddies and wetlands, extra CO2 caused soils to release more methane." Wetlands and rice fields are two major sources of methane emissions to the atmosphere.
The culprits are specialised microscopic organisms in soil, that respire the chemicals nitrate and carbon dioxide, like humans respire oxygen. The microbes also produce methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide, 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Their oxygen-free habit is one of the reasons these microorganisms flourish when atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations increase. Van Groenigen explained: "The higher CO2 concentrations reduce plant water use, making soils wetter, in turn reducing the availability of oxygen in soil, favoring these microorganisms."
The other reason these microorganisms become more active is that increasing CO2 makes plants grow faster, and the extra plant growth supplies soil microorganisms with extra energy, pumping up their metabolism. This extra plant growth is one of the main ways ecosystems could slow climate change. With more CO2, plants grow more, soaking up carbon dioxide through photosynthesis, and, the hope is that they also lock away carbon in wood and soil. But this new work shows that at least some of that extra carbon also provides fuel to microorganisms whose byproducts, nitrous oxide and methane, end up in the atmosphere and counteract the cooling effects of more plant growth.
"It's an ecological point and counterpoint: the more the plants soak up CO2, the more microbes release these more potent greenhouse gases," said Bruce Hungate, Professor at Northern Arizona University and co-author on the study. "The microbial counterpoint is only partial," continued Hungate, "reducing the cooling effect of plants by about 20%."
But it's an ecological surprise, too, and one that climate models will need to reckon with as they further refine pictures of the climate of the future. "By overlooking the key role of these two greenhouse gases, previous studies may have overestimated the potential of ecosystems to mitigate the greenhouse effect," van Groenigen concluded.
